Do you speak Schwyzerdütsch yet?

Switzerland is a language lover's paradise. With four official languages it is the most multilingual country in Europe. German takes the lead (63%), followed by French (20.3%), Italian (6.5%) and the mysterious Romansh (0.5%). Do not worry: with German you will get far.

A warm welcome in a diverse country

You are never alone as a foreigner in Switzerland. Of the 8.4 million inhabitants, 23% hold a non-Swiss passport. That is nearly 2 million people who, just like you, chose a life in this stunning Alpine country.

26 small countries in one

Switzerland consists of 26 cantons, each with its own character. Think of it as a puzzle that began in 1291 with three pieces (Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden) and kept growing. The fun bit: every canton has its own constitution, parliament and even dialect.

Swiss carnival? Jawohl!

In early February the whole country jumps into Fastnacht, Swiss-style carnival. In Basel as many as 200,000 people take to the streets with striking costumes and the unmistakable Guggenmusik brass bands. A party you simply have to experience.

The coolest sport you have never heard of

Forget skis and snowboards for a moment. The national sport of Switzerland is Schwingen. In this traditional wrestling sport two strong athletes try to pin each other by both shoulders into the sawdust, wearing special burlap trousers. It is as fun to watch as it sounds.

Mountaintop bingo

Most of Europe is fairly flat, and Switzerland most definitely is not. With 48 peaks above 4,000 metres you get endless options for mountain adventures. Hiking, climbing, or simply soaking up the view: in the Swiss Alps it is all on the table.

From cheese fondue to rösti

Whatever comfort food you grew up with, Swiss cuisine has its own lineup. Dunk your bread into steaming cheese fondue, enjoy a creamy raclette or start your day with a fresh bircher muesli. And rösti? That one will absolutely become your new comfort food.
