Moving to Switzerland sounds like a great adventure, but bringing your furniture across the border can raise some questions. Because Switzerland is not an EU country, your belongings have to pass through customs. Good news: if you meet a few conditions, you can import everything tax-free.

What conditions do you need to meet?

To move your furniture and personal belongings into Switzerland tax-free, a few things need to be in order:

  • Swiss residence: you need to show that you have a home in Switzerland, for example through a rental or purchase contract.
  • At least 6 months of ownership: the items you import must have been in your possession for at least 6 months.
  • Use them in Switzerland: the goods must actually be used in Switzerland after you import them.
  • Cross during opening hours: you have to pass the border while the customs office is open.

What customs paperwork do you need?

When you cross the border you need to have a stack of documents ready. Prepare them in advance so your move runs smoothly:

  • Inventory list: a complete list of the items you are bringing, in English or German. List everything, such as '3 boxes of clothing', '2 boxes of kitchenware' or '1 bed'. Valuable items, alcohol and food have separate rules and need to be described in more detail.
  • Customs form: fill in the form for tax-free import of your belongings in duplicate.
  • Proof of ID: have a valid passport or identity card on you.
  • Deregistration from home country: a document showing you have deregistered with the authorities in your home country.
  • Swiss residence permit or equivalent: a document confirming your move, such as an employment or rental contract.
  • Driver's license or vehicle registration: bringing a car? Bring your foreign driver's license and vehicle registration, even if they are expired.
  • Housing paperwork: proof of purchase or rental of your Swiss home.

Smart tips for a smooth move

  • Plan your border crossing: you are not required to plan ahead, but it often speeds things up. Many customs offices accept your documents by email in advance (at least 2 days before). For Basel/Weil, a popular crossing, use zoll.basel_nord@bazg.admin.ch.
  • Watch your car's weight: bringing a lot of stuff? Check that your car is not overloaded. The maximum weight is in your vehicle registration document. Do not forget to count the passengers' weight to avoid fines or unsafe driving.

Good to know: you have 2 years to bring your belongings into Switzerland tax-free under these conditions. So no stress if you cannot take everything in one trip.
