Dreaming of a career as a physiotherapist in the Swiss mountains? Then recognition of your foreign diploma by the Schweizerisches Rotes Kreuz (SRK) is your first important step. The process can feel complex, but with the right guidance and a clear roadmap it becomes much more manageable. At takeoff we guide you through every phase, so you can start your Swiss adventure stress-free.

Why SRK recognition matters

In Switzerland the physiotherapist profession is legally protected. You can only carry this title and do the work with an officially recognized qualification. The SRK makes sure every professional meets the same high standards as those trained in Switzerland. For you as a physiotherapist, that is a quality guarantee: you end up in a system where your expertise is valued.

Before your Swiss adventure begins, you go through the SRK recognition process. Here are all the phases.

Phase 1: the PreCheck

The PreCheck is the first step in the actual recognition procedure and is mandatory for everyone. The good news: this step is free and, for most physiotherapists with a European education, largely a formality.

  • The SRK verifies that your physiotherapy diploma meets the basic requirements
  • Within 4-6 weeks you receive confirmation that you can move on to the next step
  • For most European physiotherapists, the outcome is positive
  • You immediately receive information about the next steps

Documents for the PreCheck

The exact documents vary by country of training and personal situation. Most applicants need:

  • Your physiotherapy diploma
  • Course overview / grade list
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Copy of ID
  • Any additional documents depending on your situation

At takeoff our platform gives you a personalized overview of exactly which documents you need, including sample documents. We review everything and can submit the PreCheck on your behalf.

Phase 2: the preparation window

After a positive PreCheck, you have up to 24 months to submit your complete application. The good news: you do not have to wait. During the PreCheck phase you can already start gathering and translating the required documents, so you do not lose time and the rest of the process runs far more smoothly.

On our platform you immediately receive a personalized checklist with exactly the documents you need. That way you know where you stand from day one and can get moving with focus.

Phase 3: the complete application

A complete application typically includes:

  • Detailed study documents (diploma, grade lists, course overview)
  • Detailed description of your course content with exact number of teaching hours per subject
  • Certificate of Current Professional Status (CCPS): proof that you are authorized to work in your country of origin
  • B2 language certificate in German, French or Italian (may also be provided later)
  • Personal documents (ID, CV)
  • All documents professionally translated into English, German, French or Italian

Tip: start your B2 course early. Even if the certificate can be submitted later, it is wise to keep developing your language skills throughout. Curious about the practical side? Also read what you earn as a physiotherapist in Switzerland.

Once your documents are complete, you submit them to the SRK. The actual recognition process only starts when everything has been received and the first payment has been made.

Phase 4: the costs

The SRK has a clear cost structure in two phases:

  • Teilentscheid (partial decision): CHF 600 — paid when you submit your complete documentation
  • Final recognition: CHF 330-400 — paid only at the end when everything is approved
  • PreCheck: always free
  • Additional language or adaptation courses: variable costs

Phase 5: the assessment

The SRK performs a detailed analysis that looks at theoretical knowledge, practical skills and total length of study. In Switzerland the standard physiotherapy course is 4 years (5400 hours), including roughly 3,960 hours of theoretical-practical training and 1,440 hours of clinical internships.

During this phase there is little to do except wait patiently. The SRK assesses:

  • Your theoretical knowledge (anatomy, physiology, pathology, etc.)
  • Practical skills developed during internships
  • Whether your course meets Swiss standards in duration and content

Phase 6: the results

Full recognition

Congratulations! Your diploma is considered fully equivalent to a Swiss education. For full recognition you always need a B2 language certificate, so it must be submitted before you receive this status.

Partial recognition

Also good news. With partial recognition you can start working as a physiotherapist in Switzerland immediately. Most physiotherapists initially receive partial recognition, usually because they have not yet submitted a B2 language certificate. That is completely normal and no reason to worry.

Possible next steps for partial recognition:

  • Submit a B2 language certificate (most common)
  • Adaptation course (a few weeks to months)
  • Adaptation internship in a Swiss practice
  • Eligibility test

Partial recognition does not mean your education is weaker. It usually reflects minor adjustments to the Swiss system or simply the absence of your B2 certificate.

Realistic timeline: when can you start?

  • PreCheck: 4-6 weeks
  • Document collection: 2-3 months
  • SRK assessment: 3-4 months
  • Any compensatory measures: 3-6 additional months

Thanks to our experience and systematic approach, we can often shorten the process significantly and, above all, make it much more predictable.
