How exactly do physiotherapy rates work in Switzerland? Unlike many other European systems, Swiss tariff codes are simpler and more general. Still, there are a few key rate positions every physio in Switzerland should know. Here's an overview of the most commonly used codes and what they pay.

7301 — General Physiotherapy (Allgemeine Physiotherapie)

The most commonly used code. Around 80% of all physiotherapy treatments fall under 7301. It covers general complaints and single-area diagnoses, from back problems to heel spurs or a golfer's elbow.

  • Fee: CHF 47–53 per treatment (depending on the canton).

7311 — Comprehensive Physiotherapy (Aufwändige Physiotherapie)

Code 7311 is for more complex cases:

  • Treatment of children up to 6 years old.
  • Neurological conditions (e.g. MS or ALS).
  • Treatment of multiple joints or body regions.
  • Palliative care.
  • Fee: CHF 75–85 per treatment (depending on the canton).

7350 — First treatment supplement (Zuschlag für die erste Behandlung)

Code 7350 applies to the first consultation, where you take an anamnesis, do an examination and put together a treatment plan. It's always combined with a 7301 or 7311.

  • Fee: CHF 23–27 (depending on the canton).

7354 — Travel time allowance (Pauschale für die Weg-Zeitentschädigung)

For home treatments, you can bill travel time under code 7354.

  • Fee: CHF 32–38 (depending on the canton).

7340 — Medical Training Therapy (MTT)

Code 7340 is used when a doctor prescribes medical training therapy. It often covers the final phase of a treatment process, where direct guidance is no longer needed but the patient keeps training with an individual programme.

  • One referral covers 36 sessions (within 3 months).
  • Code 7340 can be billed 34 times.
  • Code 7301 is used twice: when setting up and when checking the training programme.
  • Fee: CHF 23–27 per session (depending on the canton).

The short version

The Swiss billing system for physiotherapy is simpler than many other European systems, and offers clear guidelines for different types of treatment. Whether it's general physio, complex care or medical training therapy, knowing these codes means you can run your practice smoothly and get paid properly for the work you do.
