November in Switzerland: dark outside, light on the weekends

November across much of Europe is the month where the light seems to slip away: you leave for work in the dark, you come home in the dark. Switzerland has the same short days, but the weekends light up in a way you will not easily find elsewhere. The first ski lifts spin up, autumn clings on in the valleys, and the markets start to open their doors.

The first ski resorts open their doors

Winter is around the corner. The first Swiss resorts open their slopes in November. Perfect if you cannot wait to strap your skis back on.

Engelberg Titlis (central Switzerland)

Often open from early November, with reliable snow thanks to the glacier and a clean view of the Uri Alps. Check the current info.

Saas-Fee (Valais)

A classic. The glacier delivers excellent early-season conditions, and the village carries a winter vibe well before the rest of the country has shifted gears. Discover Saas-Fee.

Davos Parsenn (Graubünden)

One of the first non-glacial areas to open, usually with a handful of slopes on weekends to get a taste of the season. Check the options.

Quick note: always double-check current opening dates and snow conditions on the resort websites. They shift year to year.

Hiking in November: autumn below, snow above

The ski season starts, but November is also a stellar hiking month. Lower valleys are often surprisingly beautiful, and the combination of autumn colours with snow-capped peaks is something you get in only a few weeks of the year.

Three practical tips for November hikes

Check the webcams. See at a glance whether your target area is still snow-free or already white. Saves nasty surprises on the spot. Watch webcams across Switzerland.

Watch the weather in Ticino. Southern Switzerland often sits ten degrees warmer than the north. Ideal when you want a mild, sunny day. Check Ticino weather.

Scan recent Instagram posts. Hashtags or location tags show you what conditions actually look like today. Surprisingly useful for judging whether a trail is still walkable.

Cosy markets and November events

Alongside the outdoors, November also brings the first winter markets. Expect local products and unmistakable atmosphere.

Zibelemärit in Bern

An ancient tradition held on the fourth Monday of November, with thousands of onion garlands and local delicacies. Tens of thousands of visitors drift through the Bernese Altstadt from 4 a.m. onwards. Expect more than 200 stalls, Zwiebelkuchen, mulled wine and a confetti battle at 4 p.m. More about the Zibelemärit.

World Cheese Awards

Bern recently played host to the international cheese awards, with a Swiss Fine Food Market and side events for cheese lovers. Worth keeping an eye on when it rolls into town again. Discover the cheese event.

First Christmas markets from late November

Zurich, Lucerne and Lugano kick off their Christmas markets in the final week of the month. Perfect for a mulled wine after work and an early dose of Christmas mood.

Bonus tip: European Outdoor Film Tour

From late November through early January the European Outdoor Film Tour rolls through Switzerland. Two hours of adventure, extreme sports and stories, from Alaska to Swiss peaks. Check the dates.

One more thing

Whether you are chasing the first snow, hanging on to the autumn colours, or warming your hands around a market mug of Glühwein, November in Switzerland has a surprising amount waiting for you in the dark days. All of this can be your new life.
